The sucking reflex is present at birth but disappears at around 3-5 months’ corrected age. Babies generally take a few weeks to master voluntary control of sucking. Your baby may or may not be ready.
Tips to help babies suck on their own:
- Massage baby’s gums
- Tap your finger on baby’s tongue or apply gentle pressure to the centre of the tongue/span>
- Let baby suck on your finger; then try a pacifier, which is similar to a nipple
